Membership & CPSS Categories & Fees

Membership is open to anyone interested in soil science and is from 1 January to 31 December annually.


New Members

New members are welcome throughout the year. Membership applications are acknowledged by email and membership benefits apply as soon as payment has been received.

Membership applications are considered by Federal Council at their quarterly meetings (March, June, September and December) and once approved, new members are forwarded a membership certificate.

The following new member rates apply in 2019.

Ordinary membership – $150 (including membership of the International Union of Soil Sciences)

New ordinary membership applications:

  • received between January and June – $150
  • received between July and October – $90 (pro rata fee)
  • received between November and December – $150 (includes membership for the following

Student membership – $70

New student membership applications:

  • received between January and June – $70
  • received between July and October – $50 (pro rata fee)
  • received between November and December – $70 (includes membership for the following year)

Retired membership –$75

New retired membership applications:

  • received between January and June – $75
  • received between July and October – $55 (pro rata fee)
  • received between November and December – $75 (includes membership for the following year)

Retired members may subscribe to the IUSS for an additional fee of $20.

Renewing Members

Renewing members are required to pay subscriptions by 31 March. Payments made after this date attract a late fee of $16.50.

The pro rata fee does not apply to renewing member subscriptions.

Renewing membership fees for 2019:

Ordinary membership – $150 (including membership of the International Union of Soil Sciences)
Student membership -$70 (including membership of the International Union of Soil Sciences)
Retired membership – $75

Retired members may subscribe to the IUSS for an additional fee of $20.

Lapsed members are required to pay one year of arrears and the current membership dues to reinstate their membership.

Payments are made for the calendar year and are not refundable.

Bronze membership $3,000 per annum

Gold membership $10,000 per annum

  • Membership for up to 20 people

Soil Research

Soil Research is an international journal for publishing research about fundamental and applied aspects of soil science.

Soil Science Australia members receive a society member discount to Soil Research which can be purchased in either print or electronic format. Both subscriptions include access to the complete archive of the Journal.

Electronic subscription (8 e-issues and access to AJSR e-archives) $104.

Print subscription (8 posted journals and access to AJSR e-archives) $131.

Additional postage costs will be incurred for overseas members. Members subscribing to the print version after 31 March will be charged an additional late fee of $20.

The print subscription offer generally closes on 30 June but members may contact the federal office to determine if the print subscription to Soil Research is available later in the year.


Certified Professional Soil Scientists

Accreditation is from 1 January to 31 December each year.

CPSS application fees

Before submitting an application for CPSS accreditation, contact the CPSS Administrator to set up an invoice for you to pay online.

Applicants for CPSS pay a non-refundable application assessment fee of $395 ($545 for non-SSA members).

Applicants for specialist CPSS certification in CSAM pay a non-refundable application assessment fee of $165 ($315 for non-members).

Pro rata application fees for SSA members

Applications received from SSA-members and approved between November and December attract the full annual rate but this also provides membership for the following year.

NOTE All successful applicants must pay the annual accreditation fee before they can receive their annual certificate and seal.

Renewing CPSS members (annual)

CPSS annual certifiation fee: $345 ($495 for non-members).

Pro rata fees do not apply to renewals.

In addition to the annual certification fee, renewing CPSSs must keep a diary of Ongoing Professional Development (OPD) in Soil Science and submit it for assessment triennially. In the assessment year, a triennium of diaries must be submitted to the CPSS Administrator before 15 March; certification is confirmed once the assessed OPD diaries are approved. If no diary is submitted, certification cannot granted and the name of the CPSS member is removed from the CPSS Register of Soil Science Experts.
