Noel Schoknecht Receives Doctor of Science (honoris causa) for Contributions to Soil Data Accessibility

Noel Schoknecht, a respected soil scientist and life member of Soil Science Australia, has been awarded a Doctor of Science (honoris causa) in recognition of his significant contributions to making soils data more accessible across Australia. This honour acknowledges Noel’s impact on land resource management and agricultural sustainability, benefiting both industry and government.

Contributions to Soil Data Accessibility and Policy

One of Noel’s key achievements has been leading efforts to make soils data widely available for use in agriculture and land management. His work has helped ensure that essential data is accessible to inform policy and decision-making, contributing to sustainable practices across the sector. These initiatives have been adopted by government entities and funding bodies, improving access to vital information.

Leading Work in Western Australia

In 2013, Noel led the publication of the Report Card on Sustainable Natural Resource Use in Agriculture, the first comprehensive documentation of the condition of agricultural land in Western Australia. The report assessed the sustainability of land use in the region and continues to guide agricultural practices and policy.

Noel also led a scientific team in the Western Australian Government, focusing on land resource assessment and soil policy development. His work has shaped state and federal policies on soil management and sustainable agriculture.

International Projects and Collaboration

Beyond Australia, Noel has contributed to international projects through the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). He has collaborated with Murdoch University since 2003 on projects in Cambodia, improving land evaluation practices. Noel’s expertise has also been applied to projects in Kuwait, China, and Abu Dhabi, advancing global approaches to soil management.

Involvement with Murdoch University and SoilsWest

Noel’s long-standing relationship with Murdoch University includes guest lectures and collaboration with staff, sharing his expertise on soil evaluation and land management. He also supports the SoilsWest group, helping to foster research that addresses practical agricultural challenges.

Life Membership and Doctorate

In 2022, Noel was awarded life membership of Soil Science Australia, recognising his extensive contributions to the field. His recent Doctor of Science (honoris causa) highlights his influence in advancing soil science and making soils data accessible, further solidifying his role as a leader in agricultural sustainability.

Soil Science Australia congratulates Noel Schoknecht on this significant recognition and celebrates his ongoing contributions to soil science both locally and internationally.
