Celebrating Excellence in Soil Science: 2024 SSA Federal Award Winners Announced

Soil Science Australia is proud to announce the recipients of the 2024 Federal Awards, honouring remarkable achievements in soil science across Australia. These awards recognise individuals who have shown exceptional dedication, creativity, and impact within the field, addressing pressing environmental challenges and furthering scientific understanding and community engagement. 

 

The 2024 Federal Award winners include: 

 

CG Stephens PhD Award 

Dr. Yuxin Huo has been honoured for her innovative research on microplastics in agricultural soils. Her thesis, which includes a significant global review of plastics in soil ecosystems, utilises novel methodologies that contribute critical insights into microplastic contamination and soil health. 

 

JA Prescott Award 

The distinguished Professor Chengrong Chen, an internationally recognised leader in soil biogeochemistry, is awarded for his impactful contributions to soil health, climate change mitigation, and environmental protection. His work, including his leadership on the 2024 Solving Plastic Waste CRC, is transforming approaches to sustainability. 

 

LJH Teakle Award 

Dr. Susan Orgill and Dr. Helen Hayden are celebrated for their tireless efforts to promote soil science across Australia. Through diverse outreach initiatives, they have engaged audiences across sectors and made soil science accessible, fostering broader understanding and sustainable land management. 

 

Fellowship Awards 

Dr. Andrew Biggs and Professor Jim He are each awarded for their exceptional contributions to the field. Dr. Biggs is recognised for his leadership in practical soil science education, including his role in the Australian Soil Judging Competition. Professor He, an esteemed microbial ecologist, has a remarkable publication record and an unwavering commitment to training future soil scientists globally. 

 

Honorary Life Membership 

Professor Lyn Abbott is awarded for her pioneering research and extensive community engagement, including her ‘Know Your Soil Biology’ workshops. With a career spanning over 50 years, Professor Abbott has made invaluable contributions to soil science, mentoring professionals and engaging with farmers nationwide. 

This year, the Publication Medal and the JK Taylor Medal were not awarded.
