A much-anticipated revision to the “Australian soil and land survey field handbook”—affectionately known as the ‘yellow book’—is now available in time for World Soil Day.
Dr Andrew Biggs launched the publication at our joint conference with the New Zealand Society for Soil Science, in Rotorua New Zealand.
The revision was developed by a working group of the National Committee on Soil and Terrain (NCST)—a committee of representatives from state and federal agencies from across Australia.
Dr Darren Kidd, Chair of the NCST and President of Soil Science Australia, welcomed the revision.
“This is a soil scientist’s key reference book. It contains the terms we use to describe soil, land and vegetation”, Dr Kidd said.
“The Yellow Book provides strict definitions for the terms we use in our profession. It’s essentially a dictionary or glossary and is an indispensable resource for anyone undertaking field work in Australia,” he said.
The yellow book is published by CSIRO publishing. Soil Science Australia members receive a 20 per cent discount on this and any other CSIRO publication.
