Inoculating legumes in acidic soils: Considerations for inoculation when growing legume crops in acidic soils (Factsheet)
This Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) factsheet explains why adequate numbers of rhizobia (root nodule bacteria) are essential for nitrogen fixation in legume crops. In acidic soils, suitable rhizobia are less likely to be present, so inoculation at sowing is required for crops such as field peas, faba beans, lentils, vetch and chickpeas. Because inoculants contain living rhizobia, maximising survival between application and plant emergence is critical to achieving rapid and effective nodulation. In acidic soils, doubling the recommended inoculant rate can improve nodulation outcomes. The factsheet includes a decision diagram for soils with pH above and below 5.5, along with guidance on identifying acidic soils, recognising crop symptoms, selecting acid-tolerant rhizobia and addressing common questions. This factsheet is relevant to legume production across Australia [ PDF 1.8 MB, 4 pages].#
This is a carefully curated database of important soil resources. The data base is not exhaustive but rather a library of the resources we believe are the most useful for the audience. Each resource has been added after careful consideration against our selection criteria, including but not limited to its scientific validity, accessibility, and readability. The library generally does not include most academic research papers but may include some open-source papers written in accessible English.
