This Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) factsheet examines the role of legumes in Australian farming systems and their potential to reduce reliance on nitrogen fertiliser in wheat-based cropping systems. While wheat will not always be the first crop grown after pulses or a pasture phase on a mixed farm, the combined inputs of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) and residual legume nitrogen (N) currently appear to be comparable to the amounts of fertiliser N used in wheat production. The rotational benefits and addition of N achieved by increasing the frequency of pulses, and green or brown manures in wheat cropping sequences, or through improvements in the legume content of pastures, represent opportunities to reduce the rates of N fertiliser applied by grain-growers to wheat.#
