Soil pits: observations, tips and trickes for soils and landscapes – NSW (Video)
In this Soil Network of Knowledge webinar, Andrew Biggs (University of Queensland) explains how to plan and deliver a soil pit demonstration for landholders. Firstly, he suggests clarifying the purpose of the soil pit e.g. to solve a problem or to educate people. This will help you decide the location for the pit, the time of day and time of year, equipment required and safety considerations. Plan the size, shape and alignment of the pit – ensuring you have good access. Break up the program with a range of engagement techniques such as providing hands-on activities, a meal and a second speaker. Start a conversation with your audience focusing on what they want to know. Have a speaking plan but be flexible. Use the right language for your audience. Watch your audience to assess how well you are communicating. The webinar also includes a lengthy Q & A session [7:27-1:22:38].#
This is a carefully curated database of important soil resources. The data base is not exhaustive but rather a library of the resources we believe are the most useful for the audience. Each resource has been added after careful consideration against our selection criteria, including but not limited to its scientific validity, accessibility, and readability. The library generally does not include most academic research papers but may include some open-source papers written in accessible English.
