Testing soil mapping to improve pasture performance – VIC (Webpage)
This Meat & Livestock Australian (MLA) webpage describes the findings of a Producer Demonstration Site project which tested whether grid-based soil mapping and variable rate application (VRA) of lime and gypsum could improve pasture production and reduce costs on central Victorian grazing farms. Trials across four sites (2020–2023) showed VRA reduced ameliorant inputs, especially gypsum, but higher soil testing costs offset these savings. No significant pasture production gains were measured compared with conventional blanket applications. The project highlighted the value of soil data for long-term planning and reinforced the need for qualified advice to interpret results. While this project was based in Victoria, the finding would be relevant to other Southern grazing regions.#
This is a carefully curated database of important soil resources. The data base is not exhaustive but rather a library of the resources we believe are the most useful for the audience. Each resource has been added after careful consideration against our selection criteria, including but not limited to its scientific validity, accessibility, and readability. The library generally does not include most academic research papers but may include some open-source papers written in accessible English.
