Tips and tactics: canola nutrition and sulfur – Central West NSW, Northern NSW, Southern QLD (Factsheet)
This Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) factsheet (published 2016, updated 2025) provides sulfur nutrition advice for canola in Central West NSW, northern NSW and southern Queensland. Earlier advice commonly recommended applying a base rate of sulfur with nitrogen as standard practice. However, more recent research shows that early sulfur applications to soil in these regions are often not warranted. Sulfur deficiencies can be significant when they occur but occurrences are rare. If needed, sulfur can be applied in-crop before stem elongation. The factsheet suggests that savings from sulfur fertiliser may be better used to increase nitrogen rates. While this research was conducted in NSW and Qld, it may also assist growers in other regions with similar soils and seasonal conditions [PDF 446 KB, 2 pages].#
This is a carefully curated database of important soil resources. The data base is not exhaustive but rather a library of the resources we believe are the most useful for the audience. Each resource has been added after careful consideration against our selection criteria, including but not limited to its scientific validity, accessibility, and readability. The library generally does not include most academic research papers but may include some open-source papers written in accessible English.
